Artie Romero remembers how tough it was to get started in the animation industry. It was 1980, and he couldn't find a studio that offered internships. He was lucky enough to get a few breaks, and after a decade of animating TV commercials, music videos and movies, he founded the ARG! studio in 1994. He immediately started accepting a few talented animation students as interns. He gave them opportunities to work on commercials, character design, corporate videos and more. They got some screen credits, and he helped them get professional work after their internships. Many of his former interns are now well established in the industry, with blockbuster movie and TV screen credits.
In 2009 the ARG! studio created a virtual internship program so that we could offer more aspiring artists the opportunity to work on professional productions and network with animation producers, directors and animators.
What are the requirements? Besides a love of animation and the ability to produce professional quality work, you need to have a reliable, high speed internet connection and a Skype account.
So why not apply? We would love to see your stuff. If you're accepted, it will be an unpaid internship. In return for your professional efforts, you will receive coaching, studio experience, and if your work passes muster, screen credits. A virtual internship does not require you to relocate to Colorado. We have meetings with our interns once a week on Skype, we give them feedback regarding their assignments, and sometimes we use Skype screen sharing to show them how to do things. Once in a while we have special guests at our weekly conferences, professionals who are stars in the animation industry.
